The characteristics of conventional hydrangea varieties, which bloom once a year and have a concentrated flowering period in summer, restrict the commercial application of hydrangeas. However, the 'White Angel' hydrangea can bloom twice stably in spring and autumn, but the mechanism of second flowering is not clear. This study investigated the annual growth and development rhythm, phenological characteristics of spring and autumn flowering, as well as changes in nutrient content of 'White Angel'. The results showed that 'White Angel' only had a leafless dormancy period in February. The flower buds for spring blooming were differentiated into summer and autumn types on branches with all buds being flower buds. Flowering began in mid-April and lasted for 65 days. The flower buds for autumn blooming were differentiated from lateral buds on branches that developed from spring shoots. Flowering began at the beginning of August and lasted for 75 days. There was sufficient soluble protein available during spring blooming to provide energy for flowering; however, there was overlap between the second flowering bud differentiation period and autumn blooming resulting in lower quality flowers during this time. Therefore, the difference between spring and autumn blooming modes is related to their growth development rhythm and flower bud differentiation type; using accumulated nutrients provides energy for spring blooms while competition with second flowering bud differentiation requires more nutrients during autumn blooms. These results have important reference value for the cultivation and commercial application of hydrangeas.
